Exo 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Some people think that using God's name as a curse word is taking God's name in vain, like "God damn it" or such. Wouldn't that be easy. Just don't use God's name as a curse word and we've fulfilled the commandment. But it's not so. Please consider this verse in Proverbs:
Pro_30:9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
Calling yourself a believer in God, but then stealing is taking God's name in vain. We are saying one thing and doing another. Same as hypocrisy. What benefit is there in being called by God's name but breaking his commandments? What profit is it to us? It's not. It's all in vain. It does no good to profess to love God but reject God's word. An empty profession is vanity and to no profit. Much of religion is "Say you believe in God, and then do what is right in your own eyes." See what God says about professing but not doing:
Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
God Wants Heart Relationship
People put reins on a horse so they can turn them about to take them where they need to go. An unbroken horse is useless for transportation and does not respond to the reins. So let's consider the meaning in this Psalm:
Psa_7:9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
Lip Service = No Good
Mat_15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
God wants us to love him with our whole heart and to mean what we say when we honor him. Who would want a spouse that went through the motions of telling you that they loved you when they really didn't?
