Sabbath Day, God's Perpetual Covenant

The sabbath (seventh day) was made Holy by God in Gen 2:2 and has never been made "unholy", just desecrated by many who claim to love God. Sadly many "Christians" teach that the sabbath was "done away with", contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ, the prophets and apostles. It is false teachers that have mislead so many who claim to be Christians.

When is the sabbath?

The sabbath is the seventh day. It came after six days of working. In the Bible we read that the months started with a new moon. They worshiped on this day and feasted together. They would spend the next six days working and rested the seventh day. So the first day of the month was new moon and day 1. They worked days 2-7 and rested on the seventh day which was the 8th day of the month. If you repeat this 6 days of work and resting the seventh, then sabbaths fall on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of each of God's months (going by moon, not Roman calendar, not Julian calendar, not Gregorian calendar). Some feast days were extra sabbaths, but as you read through the Bible, you will find the seventh day sabbaths on 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of each month.

Please make note and spend some time learning about calendars. The Roman calendar which was used by Romans in Jesus' day had 8 days in it. At this time they did not have Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc. The Roman calendar and letters for each day of the week. They were day A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H. The early Julian calendar had 8 days in it and the days were named for pagan gods that they believed reigned most during those days. The next major calendar revision was the Gregorian calendar and is used commonly today has 7 days in it, named after pagan gods. The pagan calendars do not follow God's order on keeping track of time.

God's calendar is based on the moon for months and the sun for years, tracking time perfectly. See also Calendar.

Scriptures regarding Sabbaths

I would like to start by putting scriptures related to the "seventh day / sabbath /day of rest" here so that God's inspired Word can be read first. I just used E-Sword and searched on "seventh day" and "sabbath". I was going to list all the verses, but there are 119 and by the time you read through them all, your attention would be lost as mine would probably be too. So I've listed a few that I think are most relevant to this topic.

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

The seventh day is a holy day. It was made holy and blessed by God. It was the seventh day or the day after 6 days of God's work in making heaven and earth. It doesn't say "seventh day of the week of the Roman Calendar, Julian Calendar or Gregorian calendar. Mankind had not at this time devised calendar systems based on pagan gods, rites, practices and idol worship yet.

The seventh day of God's week was made holy by God. God has never made the sabbath unholy. The seventh day was made holy during the first week of creation. The seventh day was made Holy before Abraham received his covenant of circumcision or Moses was even born or the ten commandments given.

Exodus 12:15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
Exodus 16:23 And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
Exodus 16:25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.
Exodus 16:26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.
Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Exodus 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Exodus 35:3 Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.
Leviticus 16:31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.
Levitcus 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwelling
Leviticus 23:11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
Leviticus 24:8 Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

The sabbath is an everlasting covenant, given on the seventh day of creation.

Mark 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Jesus Christ is Lord of the sabbath. Jesus Christ is the Lord of the heaven and earth also and king of the kingdom of God. So we should observe the sabbath as Jesus Christ did.

Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

The disciples of Jesus Christ kept the ten commandments of God and kept God's sabbath day holy.

John 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Heb 4:6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Blessings of the Sabbath

No commandment of God is ever given to oppress us, but to help and bless us. The seventh day sabbath is no different. There are many blessings that I've been given by God as a result of keeping the sabbath.

Saying No, is hard to do, but necessary for good building up. When designing a building, putting together a schematic diagram or figuring out a traffic pattern in a building, it is necessary to say "no" to faulty ideas and say "yes" to better ideas. Saying "No" to things that are not as good leads to things that are better.

On the sabbath day, as I walk around, many projects and cares of life come to mind. And many of them are great ideas. But it's the sabbath day and I'm reminded of my creator's word to say "no" or "not now" to these ideas and resist working on sabbath. Sometimes I'm tempted to move things around, planning things, but I've learned to say "No, today is the seventh day sabbath, the LORD's day and I'm honoring the fact that I've had six days to work and am to rest from my own labors and do his work and pleasure."

On the sabbath day is a great day to read the Bible together as a family. Dad and I often sit down together to read a chapter of the Bible and talk about it. The day of rest given by God is a great time for families to sit down around God's Word and read together. It brings families together. The sabbath is a great day to spend time to know the God of heaven better and see who he really is. The sabbath is a great day to know God so that we won't be mislead by others.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

I answer these questions for myself, giving Biblical references from which my answer is derived. Please notice that this is quite easy and I don't need to refer to anything outside the Bible or tradition or someone's opinion n this matter or survey any group of people for common beliefs. On some questions, I have written my beliefs but haven't had time to find the scripture yet. Still working on this page.
