The First Commandment of God

The first commandment of God is I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. God wrote this with his finger, along with the other nine commandments on two tablets of stone. Twice. Moses had broken the first set, and God wrote it again on the second set of stones, the front and the back.

There are at least two places where the first commandments is listed amongst the ten commandments:

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

I would like to share with you some of the thoughts of my heart as I've reflected on God's first commandment.

The LORD God is one God. He is not divided. There are not multiple LORDS.

God's name is I AM THAT I AM. This is the name of God. This is the name God gave to Moses to help him deliver the children of Israel.

The LORD GOD is the one who delivers us out of bondage, just like the LORD GOD delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt, the house of bondage.

God did the work of deliverance. No man did. Moses obeyed God, and God did the redemption.

Only God saves us with his might arm. Only God can rightly claim to be our master. It was only He that was able to redeem us from the hand of our enemy. Only God can pay the price for us as slaves to sin to be his servants.

While the children of Israel were brought out of Egypt, it was also a house of bondage. And now I am brought into God's house, a house of freedom.

I think the first commandment is one of the less understood commandments. When the children of Israel had forsaken God's commandments and lifted up their eyes in bondage, then they remembered the LORD who brought them out of Egypt. This first commandment is one of remembering the work of God and gives us hope for the future.

It was in my fourth reading through of "old testament" scripture that I realized how many times that the LORD God reminded the children of Israel that it was HE who delivered them out of Egypt and brought them into the promised land of Canaan, now called Israel.

I would like to share with you how the first commandment has affected my life and my choices. While you may think the first commandment doesn't apply to you, I hope to persuade you that it has had a powerful positive affect on me and been a great blessing. God's Word and work has been my salvation.

I am redeemed by the LORD God. Only God paid my ransom and delivered me. Only He is my Saviour. Only He is my Redeemer. There is nobody else that has any right to try to be my master or take God's rightful place. God paid for me. All the abusive pastors, false prophets and liars who work against God and try to get me to join their organizations have no right to demand that I join them and no right to take God's rightful place in my life.

Only God has redeemed me. I have no obligation to anyone other than God and to love my neighbor. I am God's. I am obligated to Him. I am obligated to obey God's commandments out of love, for His great love for me.

There is freedom and blessing after being out of slavery to sin. I can read the Word of God and seek to understand it, as it is. I don't have to try to make God fit into some religion. I am free to read and believe. I can soak it up as a sponge. I don't have to filter the Word of God through someone else's opinion of what God should or should not be like. I don't have to filter it through what someone else thinks is acceptable.

The LORD God who delivered me from bondage is strong enough to keep me from bondage. God has given me many instructions and warnings (and has to all men) through the scripture. God has kept me from getting entangled in a yoke of bondage. God has kept me from joining another cult. And even greater than that, God has brought me into fellowship with others who love Him and are getting to know Him.

God is powerful. When I have worries or concerns, I can cast them on Him. God cares for me always. He knows the number of hairs on my head. He knows all things.

I am God's. I am to please Him. I don't have to be a people pleaser. God wants me to love others as he has loved me. I am free to show people how God would like to deliver them from bondage. God wants them to be redeemed and set free also.

God is who he is. He is not always who others say he is. God certainly wasn't who I made him out to be or believed him to be based on my upbringing. I have had to throw aside my preconceptions about God that didn't match the Bible. I realized that I didn't even KNOW God before. That was an eye opener. God is who he is, not who I try to make Him or want Him to be.

God is the great I AM. The Word of God was made flesh and dwelt among us. My redeemer lived on this earth, taking on flesh, and now intercedes as the high priest. God is the great "I am"

Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. Jesus Christ claimed to be the great "I Am".

God is the one who delivers others. I cannot. God is everyone elses' God and not me. I don't even want people to try to make me God no matter how much help they've received. In fact, since they acknowledge that they've received help, that is proof that they should glorify God and not me.

I see Jesus Christ is God. Jesus Christ explained God to us.
I am the way, the truth, and the life...
I am the resurrection, and the life
I am the Good Shepherd.
I am the door.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
I am the root and offspring of David.
I am the bright and morning star.
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore
I am holy
I am Jesus whom thou persecutest...(spoken to Paul)
I am the God of thy fathers (spoken to Moses)
I am a king
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman
Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am

When others are delivered and want to serve the LORD, then the LORD God is their God. I am not to try to bring them into bondage by teaching them anything of myself. I am obligated to tell them, that the LORD GOD is the one deliverer and that they should serve him.

I am obligated when others try to put people who've escaped bondage back into a slavery, I am obligated to tell them that God is their God and deliverer. They owe nothing to anyone else, any other person for this work.

When people claim to know God and teach people to not obey the commandments of God, I am obligated to let them know that God wants us to keep his commandments. We are to obey God and not others who contradict God. We don't have to bow to them, or surrender to them. We are the LORD's. It is He who redeemed us and not some other.

God is good and one LORD. He is not divided. Anything against the Word of God is not of God. It is my duty and the will of God to know God and love Him.

I am only saved by the LORD Jesus Christ. And no other name can save me. I don't need to join a cult, religious group or organization to be saved. I am saved in the name of the LORD.

God did His work first before establishing His covenant. We can all marvel at how he delivered the children of Israel. His might strength, his plagues on Egypt. What God is there like this? Nothing in Egypt could compare.

Praise God! He delivered me. If thousands cheer when a man catches a pigskin football and runs across a line, how much more should we stand up, lift up our hands to the LORD Almighty and say "Praise to you LORD. How great you are. Our salvation, redeemer and Savior. All praise to you LORD." By the Lord God's incredible foreknowledge and power, he brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, the house of bondage as he foretold to Abraham. And he delivered me. Many have told me that it was a miracle, having been a worker, that the Lord delivered me. It is truly amazing.

...ran out of strength here writing. more later. I hope you can see what a profound impact the first commandment of God has, when believed / mixed with faith. God's commandments are good for me. They are holy, just and perfect. How incredible God is!

Scriptures Related to First Commandment

There are a host of writings in the Bible referring to and based on the first commandment of God. He is one passage:

Isa 45:21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

Here are some scriptures elaborating on The LORD God being one LORD.

One God - The LORD our God is one LORD

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: and thou shalt love..." Maybe you've thought to yourself "Why would God say that the Lord our God is one Lord?" Well, when Jesus Christ came, his name was "Emanuel" Which means "God with us". And Jesus Christ did miracles. Jesus Christ claimed to be the great "I AM" (God) which delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt. So either Jesus Christ was a liar (not God) or he was God in the flesh. The disciples worshiped Jesus Christ as God. If Jesus Christ was not God, then the disciples would have been commiting idolatry (breaking the second commandment) and Jesus Christ would have been sinning by allowing people to worship Him. Since Jesus Christ was God, it was OK and right that the disciples worshiped Jesus Christ. And this is another reason why if you don't even know the ten commandments, then you don't know God. And I would dare say that if you don't believe Jesus Christ is God, then you must think Jesus Christ is a fraud to have allowed the disciples to worship Him.

Learning that Jesus Christ is God was one of the first things I learned after leaving the cult. And this was one of the first things that I told my dad after I left the cult. It made so much sense to my dad, that he left the cult also.

One God Who Made Covenants

Mal_2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

There is one God, who is father of all and who has created us all. He has made covenants with men of Faith. People who don't have faith in God also profane the covenants with these men of faith. See also Covenants

Many Jews believed that there was one God.

Mar_12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
Rom_3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

Paul wrote to the Romans that there is one God, and that He is the God of those who have faith in Him. And Paul wrote the same to the Corinthians, Ephesians and to Titus:

1Co_8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
Eph_4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
1Ti_2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

I and my Father are one - Jesus Christ

Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

Jesus Christ said he was one with the Father. Of course, if I didn't have a decent understanding of the first commandment (One God), I wouldn't understand what Jesus Christ was saying when he said "I and the Father are one" and why the Jews took up stones to kill Jesus Christ for this.

I find it sad that most people who profess to be Christians don't believe in the Word of God, specifically the ten commandments. Many churches don't keep the ten commandments and many of their followers don't even know the ten commandments (they could not list them from memory). But the commandments of God are the Word of God and the expression of God's love. And this first commandment is the greatest of all the commandments according to Jesus Christ. And the Bible says, whoever claims to know God but doesn't believe in the ten commandments is a liar. Surely, it is important and relevant to understand that there is one Lord and "the LORD our God is one LORD"

If I didn't love God, I wouldn't care about his commandments. And if I didn't believe in the love and goodness of the commandments of God, then I would not worship Jesus Christ nor would I tell others about the love of God. To love God with my heart, soul, mind and strength brings joy to my heart and allows me to truly "walk in the light" with Jesus Christ.

God that Saves - Delivers from Bondage

I love this commandment because it reminds me that it was God that saved the children of Israel from the house of bondage. And it is the same God of the children of Israel that saved me from my sins and delivered me from the man-made religious bondage that I was in. God brought me out of my own Egypt. God separated me from mine enemies and showed me his power to save. God has provided all my needs of comfort, knowledge, encouragement, understanding, faith, signs, wonders, compassion that I need. He is my God who delivered me. Yes, this is another great lesson of the first commandment. God delivers and saves! I hope He is your God too!

One Master

The Bible and life teaches that we can only have one master. We cannot have two masters. As the Bible says:

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

God knows our needs and will take care of them as we seek Him first. We can safely seek His will first without fear.

One God - Taught by Apostles

Rom_3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
1Co_8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
Gal_3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
Eph_4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
1Ti_2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Curse of No Faith in the One God

Jeremiah 17:5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

God wants to write His first commandment on our heart. He has written it on my heart. Will you let Him write it on your heart too?
