The Second Commandment of God
The second commandments is that we are to have no other gods before the LORD GOD.
There are at least two places where the second commandment of God is written in the Bible.
Exo 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Deu 5:7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Deu 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: Deu 5:9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, Deu 5:10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
My Former Idolatry
Mar 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Loving something else more than God or ourselves is idolatry. Again, when we love someone else more than God or ourself, we are committing idolatry and are idolizing them.
I realize that while I was a 2x2, I was idolizing the workers. I was loving them more than myself. I was loving them more than God. Jesus Christ said to love your neighbor as yourself, not more than yourself. Loving others more than myself is idolatry. I should never love or trust anyone else more than God.
Many people wrongfully portray jealousy. But God is Jealous for us. He doesn't want us wandering off to serve other Gods. And God is serious, that if we do, he is going to get upset. I believe a study on the jealousy of God is very important.
Exo 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. Exo 34:17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.
The Bible gives the clear solution as to what to do when God is angry for us because of our idolatry.
Deu 4:24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger: I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed. And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you. And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
Nah 1:2 God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
I know for a fact, that God doesn't want lip service in my worship of Him. And I wouldn't want someone to give me lip service in friendship but really not seek my own good from their heart. The New Testament is witness to this. God wants to write his law on our hearts. He wants us to love his words and love him with our whole heart. Please consider the full meaning of the new testament as stated in the Bible:
Heb 10:15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, this is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
How Much Is God Jealous
You may have heard it said of some people, It's just in their blood. As in - something is so much a part of them, that it is their life, or essence of being. (Blood is the life). I would like to share with you some things about Jesus Christ that show how much and how important it is that God wants us to worship him with our heart and not love idols and lies. See how much the new testament (God's law written in our hearts) is a part of him:
Mat_26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Mar_14:24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
Luk_22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Taught by the Apostles
1Co_11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
God's want his will, his life to be written in our hearts. He wants a heart relationship, a relationship of love.
