Fifth Commandment - Honor Father, Mother

Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

With Promise

Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Parents

Many parents have done a lot to raise their kids. Sure, there are many that have abused their kids or mistreated them. But for many, parents have been very helpful and have spent much energy in raising their kids. It is fitting that parents should be honored. I believe this includes listening to them, their counsel, taking care of them in their old age as they did for us when we were young. It is a big red flag if someone tells you that you don't need to take care of your parents or that it's safe to abandon them. I could never imagine the feeling of sadness that people must feel, dying in old age and not being cared for or honored. There are needs of parents beyond food, water and clothing.

I have seen parents honor their kids. And have seen those same kids dishonor their parents. It's a tragedy.

Honoring Elders

I've heard people say that many kids today don't honor their elders. This is true. And it's taught in the Bible that we are to respect and honor the elders:

Lev_19:32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

On a similar line, here's a forceful statement:

1Ti 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
