Things that Have Helped Me Heal

I've been out of the cult for eight years now. Here's a list of things that have helped me.

Bible

I've read my Bible. But it's kinda hard to read the Bible when all you can think about is what the workers have said on the Bible. Reading the Bible reminded me of a lot of things that were painful. Satan just used those memories to torment me. The Psalms are a great comfort. David wrote a lot of very helpful things that have ministered to my heart.

Prayer and God

I didn't know God much before. I could parrot what I had learned, but that was it. I have learned how to pray to God. I have learned to pray a lot, and about everything. Prayer has been an under-used resource before. I have learned to pray about "natural things", like my job, business, this website, choices etc. I have never really expected anything out of my prayers before. Now I have much more faith as God has answered prayer after prayer.

A Christian Friend

Besides the Bible, I have one good Christian friend, Rita Hageman, who has made a huge difference in my life. Normally my "friends" have led me in the wrong direction and given me bad advice. Having a friend to share my joys and sorrows with has been a huge relief. Through her patience and responses, I have learned a lot about myself and helped me to heal. Having someone that I care about has helped make my heart more tender. Leaving a cult is tough. And I've tended to toughen up to withstand the abuse. Now God is helping me be strong through gentleness.

Jokes

Dulling the pain. I've written hundreds of 2x2 jokes before to try to laugh to dull the pain. The jokes helped me identify the pain, but didn't provide the answer. Laughter may help the body deal with stress, but it doesn't cause a full healing.

Alcohol

I haven't turned to alcohol to try to forget.

People

Talking to people about my experience has helped.

Message Boards

Message boards were interesting, but not very helpful. There is a lot of garbage being taught in the guise of "help" or "comfort"

Interactive Bible Studies with Christians

I'm talking about reading the Bible and asking and answering questions based solely on the content of what was read. this has been REALLY helpful. This is how I came to understand Mathew 10, Mark 10, Luke 10 and John 10. After a few years of seldom reading my Bible, and then going back to it, I had a different perspective when reading it.

Christian Books

There are many helpful "Christian" books out there. There is some trash also. I think it's better for people to stick to the Bible.

Talking

I found talking with some Christians helpful. Some "Christians" have their own agenda and just want to draw you into their church. I needed interactive conversation.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. - Jesus Christ speaking to Saul, see Act 26:18, see Salvation through Jesus Christ.
