Waking Up Late in a Cult

Some people wake up very late in their cult involvement. They may have to live with the consequences of their choices the rest of their lives.

Emails of Women Waking Up Too Late

I have gotten emails from many women (especially) who have turned their backs on their family, job, home and friends to run off and marry a 2x2, and then have woken up (too late) and realized that they made a huge mistake. This is heart rending. But what can be said? I try to warn people, but obviously, you can only warn so many people. And even if you do warn people, will they listen? And if they do listen, then what about the lies that are being whispered in their ears, like these lies:

Lies whispered in women's ears:

  • "It's not true. Those stories are made up. They are just bitter."
  • Those websites are about some other group.
  • My love, don't read those things. Look at me...would I ever lie to you?
  • We're not like that are we dear? You've been to meetings? Are we really a cult? They're crazy.
  • There are bad apples in the bunch, but it's rare. The bad people just quit coming to MEETINGS.
  • Our MEETINGS are not like that. We're Christians here.
  • Every church has problems like this. But for the most part, everything is great in our simple meetings.

Worse Case of Waking Up Too Late

I think the worst story I heard was of a woman who was raped or molestation/sexual abuse by a man. It was covered up and the problem not dealt with. Later on, the woman married the man. She finally found out the 2x2s were a cult and reported the sexual abuse. But the police couldn't do anything because it had been over 7 years since it happened. When her husband found out, he was furious. The woman is still married to him because she: 1) Doesn't believe in divorce, 2) Doesn't have an education or a job 3) Doesn't have anywhere else to live 4) Most of her friends are in the cult. So if you think your life is bad, try being about 60 years old and imagine yourself in her shoes.

Waking Up Typically Results in Divorce

Many women who wake up will end up getting a divorce after they start seeing the abuse heaped on them. They revolt at the man-made rules of : no make-up, no pants, wear your hair in a bun, dress like the sister workers, attend the meetings...And when women start asking questions, they see how little they are thought of by the answers they receive. When they see that they are just being used and abused, then all the "love" they thought was in the marriage simply flies out the window in a matter of minutes.

Most cases of people (mostly women) waking up much later result in them divorcing their PROFESSING husband and getting a job and moving out. The divorces are typically nasty with 2x2s testifying against the person (typically women) who is no longer attending the MEETINGS. Sometimes the kids end up staying with the PROFESSING father which makes things nearly unbearable on the woman. And even worse, the PROFESSING father takes the kids to MEETINGS. Because, after all, didn't he tell her that he wanted their kids to always go to MEETINGS and not another church? Remembering all those warning signals and red flags is hard on women and really hits home after the divorce. How could I be so stupid? - They often say to themselves. But the worst is yet to come. Soon the father has persuaded the kids that "Mom" is going to hell because she is not PROFESSING and attending MEETINGS. And what do you think this does in the kids minds? They discredit and disrespect mom, treating her like an infidel (whether she is Christian or not, they don't care) and not honoring their mother.

A Mothers Hope - After Waking Up Too Late

What is a divorced mother to do after waking up too late? She is divorced now, with maybe one or more kids who her former husband has turned against her. Where is a mother's hope?

A divorced, abused mother's hope is in God. God can forgive sins. And while an abusive father may turn the kids against her, she can still speak words of kindness and truth to others. And a mother can be full of good works. A mother can turn to a Christian church for financial assistance and fellowship and support. And a divorced mother must be exceedingly wary of other people that would try to take advantage of her.

While many women and some men have woken up too late, be assured that their is hope and answers in the arms of God. Here's a story in the Bible about a man who woke up.

Luk 15:11 And he said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

While you may not have a father, or relatives that will take care of you like this loving father, I hope you can see that God loves us even more than the father in this story. All of us who come to the LORD are like the prodigal son. We have not heeded the Word of God and have taken our own way. But God is ready for us to return to him and welcomes us.
