The Church

What is the Church Described in Bible?

Some people think that "church" is where you go for religious services. I saw from the Bible that the church is the body of Jesus Christ, those of us who have faith in God, whether Jew or Gentile. I found also that there is only one church or body of believers, and that that church (the body of believers) can be all around the world. The church in a specific location is also refered to as "the church of X" where X represents the city where the individuals of the church live.

Mat 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The Church and Removing Offenders

Mat_18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

The church is the body of believers who listen to a problem caused by someone in the church. The church are the people who are told the offenses of one individual by another member of the church who is supported by 1-2 witnesses. The church has the power (from God and by God) to remove offenders from the body of believers. In fact, one or two have the power to remove a believer from the church. Offenses by people against children of God are a serious issue to God. It's like removing a rotten apple so the whole bunch is not spoiled.

The church must have the mind of Christ and have faith in the commandments of God. The church must have good judgment and discernment.

Act_2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

The church is added to by Jesus Christ with people who should be saved.

The Church and Annanias and Saphira

Act 5:11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
The church may fear as the see the powerful works of the Holy Spirit.

The Church in the Wilderness

Act 7:38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us: To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt, Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

The church are the people who have faith in God throughout the ages. In the previous passage, it refers to the believing Jews in the wilderness as the church.

The Church and Persecution

Act_8:1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

Since I believe in Jesus Christ, I receive persecution. If we lied and told people what they wanted to hear, there wouldn't be much if any persecution. I have been slandered, libeled and had crimes committed against me by people who even claim to be "Christians". The church will always experience persecution. The sun in the parable of the sower, seed and soils is likened to persecution. It can cause some who aren't "deep-rooted" to wither away.

Act_8:3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.
Act_11:22 Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
Act_11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
Act_12:1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
Act_12:5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
Act_13:1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. - Jesus Christ speaking to Saul, see Act 26:18, see Salvation through Jesus Christ.
