Selfishness is the lack of consideration for God and others and is sin. Religious people call others who don't fit into their group or fulfill their wishes to be "selfish". What does the word selfish mean?

I have had to unlearn many cult insinuations and learn the real definitions of words. So what does the word selfish mean? And what is the definition of the word as cult's use it?

I have found that when word's are defined in context of the Word of God, then they carry the greatest and most accurate of meanings. Without looking up the word, here are some thoughts. Of or pertaining to one's self. That's what I think it should mean. Thinking about this word in context of the LORD, it reminds me of the greatest and second greatest commandments: 1) to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and 2) to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Surely, to only consider one's self or selfish interests in making decisions is to ignore the greatest love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. If I am being selfish, and give the greatest preponderance to myself, then how am I loving God with all my heart...all my soul...all my mind..and all my strength? To be selfish (in this definition of the word) is to break the greatest commandment. But to give greatest consideration, in fact, all consideration of the LORD, then this is not selfishness but worship. And truly worship that glorifies God. If I am selfish, then I glorify myself, but as I love God with my all, then I am in worship of God. And God looks after His own :)

Considering selfishness in the light of the second greatest commandment, then solely or mostly only considering one's self is to lessen the consideration of our neighbor. And who is our neighbor? This question was asked a couple thousand years ago and Jesus Christ's answer is in

Luk 10:29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

Staying focused on the topic of selfishness, selfishness and giving greater consideration of ourselves and our neighbor, I find that selfishness gives the greatest consideration to ourselves and little to none to our neighbor. Or I should say "neighbors", plural, with an "s" on the end. In our lives, we have many neighbors. So selfishness then would be giving greatest consideration to ourselves and less down to none towards our neighbors. Some people call selfish people "narcissistic".

Now to take a flip-side of selfishness, I come up with with idolatry ~ the consideration and domination of another individual's interests above my own. For example, when the FRIENDS idolize the WORKERS by seeking their benefit (like in covering up the sexual abuse of children) for the benefit of the WORKERS, but at the detriment of the parents and their children. Actually, PROFESSING parents feel relieved when they give up exposing crimes of the WORKERS as they forsake the burden and responsibility of protecting their children and other people's children. So this idolatry is a convenient excuse to shirk their own responsibilities.

Worshiping God and giving His will all consideration is God's will. And to love others the same as ourselves (not more and not less) is God's pleasure. God did not ask us to idolize/ love others more than ourselves.

My conclusion is that the concept of selfishness in the light of the two greatest commandments of the LORD is very clear. Selfishness breaks the two greatest commandments of God. Selfishness leads to idolatry. Selfishness causes us to not love our neighbors/all those around us. Idolatry can be an excuse for selfishness that leads to the destruction of ourselves and others. But to love God is worship and to love others equally with ourselves leads to great peace, fellowship and harmony with God and true fellow Christians.

In the context of the 2x2 cult, I state that the OVERSEERS, WORKERS, ELDERS, the FRIENDS and their RECRUITERS are very selfish people. In the FRIENDS idolatry of the WORKERS, lying to their recruits about what they believe and what the WORKERS believes and in manipulating and slandering people for their own pleasure... it all results in sin and in the abuse of children and in the destruction of marriages and in the destruction of families and worse yet..leads to a lost eternity.

I marvel at God's wisdom. The two greatest commandments of God prevent and dissuade selfishness and point us in the right direction in our heart, our soul, our mind and how to spend our strength. God's Word is so clear, reasonable, powerful and always relavent in bringing direction and healing to mankind.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. - Jesus Christ speaking to Saul, see Act 26:18, see Salvation through Jesus Christ.
