Pride Hinders

Pride keeps many people from understanding the basics of the Bible and hinders developing a relationship with God.

What is pride? What does the Bible say about pride? Why does it keep us from growing, building relationships or receiving correction?

Many times I've heard words, but never tried to define them. Defining words has helped me immensely. I never was one for looking up things in a dictionary, but I'm more in the habit now, even with simple words.

Some people think they are intellectually smart and can outwit God. I don't think anyone is "smarter" than God. Or think that they know better than God. I don't think anyone has a greater capacity for knowledge, understanding and wisdom than God.

One of the ways I've learned to understand something is to read what the Bible says about it:

Leviticus 26:19 And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

Evidently pride has something to do with perceived power.

2 Chronicles 32:26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

Pride is the opposite of humility. Pride is of the heart. Humbling ourselves (breaking our pride?) is something we can do. Hezekiah did it.

My Broken Pride

Having been a 2x2 for years, and a worker, I was proud, thinking more highly of myself than I ought.

And I went to college, and took among other classes, a Calculus-based course in Physics.

And I had this teacher (just who I needed) who was blunt and forthright. He would ask questions to the class in general to see what they knew.

One day, he asked if someone could explain what ... was. I thought I knew, or could make a good-sounding guess of it. I raised my hand....gave my best answer and put it down, having done my "best". He said to me ~"You don't know what you're talking about." I was hurt.

My pride was broken. I was upset inside. Then the teacher, without losing stride, went on to explain the concept. He explained it clearly and completely and so easily. He knew what he was talking about. I realized the teacher was right. I didn't know what I was talking about. I didn't understand the concept. And that is why I could not explain it. And in fact, he understood it so well, he was teaching this class. People had hired him to teach this subject. And wasn't I going to class to learn? Wasn't that why I was there? I didn't know this stuff and that's why I was there. Lesson learned. Two lessons learned: one lesson about the subject and the best subject = the on about my pride. It was the best lesson this teacher ever taught me.

I took more of this professors courses. And when he asked questions about a concept, I made sure that I knew it well, from the book, before I dared raise my hand.

And after several months that it took getting use to college, studying on my own homework etc, he even allowed me to explain some concepts to students who were struggling. One instance, after I had related charges on a conductor to being similar to air pressure in a closed vessel, he commended me, and then pointed out to the student how my parallel or analogy was correct in some instances, it was different in others. I was excited.

I got all A's in his class. I was fascinated by science. What I loved about Physics, kinematics etc was the orderliness of it all. And it was so simple, once you understood it.

And no need for pride or fluff: pure, basic knowledge of the most basic concepts of our world, and widely accepted, resolved and agreed upon by physicists around the world. What a stark and welcome contrast to the "gospel meetings" I had been taught in as a child.

Still today, I am fascinated by the most simple things in creation. The moon which orbits the earth, and yet appears to chase and fall behind the sun (the earth orbiting the sun and the moon orbiting the earth (and the sun)), it's 29.5 days in cycles...the stars in our galaxy and the tilt of the earth creating such beauty at night and seasons. Wow! What an amazing creation of God. How great it was for my pride to be broken and to learn to instead instead humble myself to learn. Pride was such baggage and bondage and self-delusion. This simple breaking of my pride helped me later to leave the 2x2 cult.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. - Jesus Christ speaking to Saul, see Act 26:18, see Salvation through Jesus Christ.
