How to Spot 2x2 Lies
What is a Lie?
A lie is something that is not true. To spot a lie, you must by definition know the truth.
Many people are too proud of their abilities to spot lies. Most people think that they can spot lies by looking at a person's face, seeing how sweet they sound, listening to their "attitude" when they say something etc. I've heard of studies that show people can spot lies 50% of the time. In otherwords, people cannot. 2x2 overseers and 2x2 workers use this to deceive people. They put on a front to deceive and lie to people. This is one reason why I hate sweet nicey talk. It reminds me of the devil. Can you spot the lies when Satan deceived Eve with his lie? Satan sure sounded believable. See also Satan Deceives Eve
If you don't know the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, it may be impossible for you to pick out the lies. I've also found that even long-time Christians cannot spot 2x2 lies and are deceived by them. If you don't know how to try the spirits, and you don't even know the seven spirits of God, this will probably be tougher and maybe impossible for you. The human soul cannot spot spiritual lies. The sinful soul that we are and the wicked fleshly hearts are no match for Satan's lies.
Questions to Ask
I am going to give you a list of questions you can ask, and then step you through some sample 2x2 notes.
Are All the Words in the Bible?
There are words used by the cult that are not in the Bible. Like "convention" or "conventions". If you search in the Bible, you will not even find the word used at all.
Cult Jargon or 2x2 Redefined Words
Sometimes 2x2s will use a word in the Bible, but they will use it in a way it is not meant to be used. When they misuse a word, naive people may start to believe it means something different because of the context in which it is used. An example is the word "overseer". There are seven verses in the Bible that contain the word "overseer", but none of them refer to a "head worker who controls doctrine over a geographical area that tells pairs of workers where to go and when and what not to preach about".
Combining Words to Form Idea not in the Bible?
Are they combining two or more words (that are used in the Bible) to form a non-Biblical idea? For example, I had a 2x2 email me about the "old law". The word "old" is used in the Bible. The word "law" is used in the Bible. But when I did a search on "old law" to see what he was referring too, I did not find it. The term "old law" also implies that there might be a "new law". But there is no "new law" in the Bible. By combining two words together, 2x2s can try to teach something that the Bible clearly does not teach (in this example, that there is an old law and a new law). Other examples are "Jewish Sabbath". The Sabbath is the LORD's sabbath, not the Jews. These subtle sneaky way of wording things deceives people and causes them to come to erroneous conclusions that can lead them to a lost eternity. If we don't love the truth, we will accept a lie.
Imagine sending a car-wanting teenage girl (who is very unlikely to know much about cars) to a proverbial used-car salesman. Ok, maybe you feel a shudder go through you. She is probably not going to be able to spot lies of a used-car salesman because she doesn't have much knowledge about cars. So it is with many "Christians". Many of them don't know the Bible well and have been in a church with their own rabbit-trails of theology. They are sitting ducks for many experienced 2x2 workers. I believe the 2x2 workers and many of their sharp followers are talented con-artists, able to beguile the most sincere of souls. Only the love of knowledge can save a person. You have to search for the true knowledge in the Bible in order to spot the lies. You must know the Word of God. And the more you talk with a 2x2, the better they are at being able to tell you the lies that you may want to hear in order to accept them. There is a spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD, that is of God. Search the scriptures. You may want to use a program like E-Sword, www.e-sword.net, to find scriptures quickly.
1Sa 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
What is understanding? Someone may give you some knowledge like E= M C ^2, but if you don't understand it, it won't do you much good. If someone tells you that you are a sinner, how can that help you if you don't know what a sinner is? We need to have an understanding of the Bible for it to profit us. Satan quotes scripture, but if we don't know what the scripture means (look at context and as it relates to other things in the Bible) then we can be deceived to believe a lie. What "understanding" does a 2x2's lies convey? Are they trying to justify sin? justify apathy? ignorance? etc. If somebody steals from you, and they say "Everything is God's anyway, the whole earth isn't yours.", then they have twisted the scriptures to justify theft. The overseers, workers and their followers have many lies to teach and sins to justify. They have become practiced with certain verses that many people don't understand. Many are seasoned liars and are expert at it. Document things and if you cannot figure it out, get some Godly counsel from several people. Even if you can figure out their lies, keep others who are Godly and trustworthy informed of what you are doing. You don't want to be ensnared in their lies yourself when trying to help someone else.
Deu 4:5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
2x2s teach lies that are foolishness. Godly counsel and scripture lead a person to be wise in God's eyes. Telling lies to justify our own sins makes us wise in our own eyes, but a fool before God. If you take what the 2x2s are teaching, does it lead to destruction? For example, 2x2s teach that workers have to go out in pairs. But 2x2s that go out in pairs still sleep with women in their fields. Jesus Christ taught the apostles certain things to do when they went to the Jews. Mixing those instructions of Jesus with dishonest 2x2 workers leads to folly as workers go from home to home, and some of them molest little kids. This is not wise! There are many things that overseers, workers and their followers believe that are not wise. Learn from the LORD and pray for wisdom to be discerning.
Jas 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
I believe it is really important when viewing cult material or conversing with a cult member to have several good friends working with you and to get counsel of them. Why should you get overtaken by a cult member as you are trying to exit a cult or help someone being recruited or helping them exit a cult? In fact, it's good to have the spirit of counsel, that is, desiring to get counsel on things that come up in life in order to make good decisions and prosper in your life. Bad counsel causes bad things to happen in our life, like a plague on us. Not seeking counsel can lead to bad promises.
Jos 9:14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD. (read rest of story too)
Kings reign and make decisions by talking with counselors. If kings know they need counselors, shouldn't we be as wise and have counselors too? people whose lives are honorable and upright and fear the LORD.
1Ki 1:12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
If you get stuck on something that 2x2s believe and need some help, simply put your name, email (maybe type it in twice so I can get back to you) and your questions and I will do my best to refute the 2x2 lies or add some explanation from my own experience.
The teachings of Jesus Christ make us holy - set apart and clean for God's use. The teachings and lies and practices of the 2x2s permit bad thoughts and teachings that lead to sin. If an idea encourages ,e to accept many other lies, then I believe it is a bad idea, teaching, practice and a lie.
2Co 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
William Irvine claimed to get a special revelation from God that his "workers" (when he was part of the Faith Mission, see www.faithmission.org) were the apostles of God. This revelation that he supposedly got from God (the Alpha Message) does not match up with the Bible. You can compare and contrast this to Paul, the apostle, receiving a revelation from Jesus Christ on the way (Acts 22:7) to Damascus. God does not give special revelations of any private interpretation. Everything of God matches up and lines up with the Bible. Anything else is not of God. Paul communed with the apostles to make sure what he had received was of God.
Gal 2:2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
Any cult member who claims to have a special understanding or insight or knowledge does not match the Bible
2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
Changes - Individuals - Group
The cult changes it's teachings all the time. Experiences of individuals vary but the basic theology is consistent, and it is wrong. Some 2x2s will claim they teach one thing, but they say something else in meetings. 2x2s may write one thing on message boards (without using their name), but will say something else in the presence of an elder, worker or overseer. But the group as a whole, breeds a consistent type of fruit that is not of God, and that is rebellion against the LORD. Wishful thinking on some people's part will not change the history of the 2x2 cult.
When I grew up, I listened to the questions that my folks asked. I learned to ask those questions. Here are some questions that you can ask yourself.
On Nov 23rd, 2012, Frank wrote to me in an email "Blah, blah"
You may want to keep them in a binder. Printing out emails and writing your notes and comments and circumstances on the email and putting it in a binder. Some people have file cabinets full of old 2x2 notes.
