Disciples of Jesus Christ?

Disciples of Jesus Christ? Many claim to be Christians, or disciples of Jesus Christ but don't know the basics of the Bible, nor do they want to learn more. This analogy should help put things in perspective.

Johnny thinks He's in Harvard.

Suppose for a moment that you met a young man named Johny. And Johnny, says to you, "I'm going to Harvard". Well, you might be impressed (depending on your view of Harvard). You ask Johnny, "What is your major?" And Johnny replies "Mathematics". You ask him what he has learned so far, and Johnny says "I'm learning basic addition and am in a remedial course." So what's 3+3 you ask him? Johnny proudly answers "3 + 3 = 6". Clearly Johnny knows enough math as many children.

Next year you run into Johnny at a coffee shop. And you ask Johnny how he's doing. He says to you, "Well, I'm going to Harvard." Well, OK, you think to yourself, he said that before. I guess he wants me to remember this or be impressed by it. Then you ask Johnny, "What are you learning now?" And Johnny says "Well, I'm learning Mathematics". "Great", you reply, "And what have you learned now?" Johnny thinks for a bit and says "I'm learning basic arithmetic." Hmm, you think to yourself. Johnny was learning this last year. Has he not progressed? I mean, how can he be attending Harvard? He may have been taking remdial courses to get up to speed, but how can he still be on basic math? So you ask Johnny, "What book are you using in class?" Johnny tells you the book (a common math book) and you ask him, "In Chapter 2 in that book it tells about division. What is 8 divided by 2?" Johnny looks at you, puts on this offended face and says "Are you doubting that I'm in Harvard?" Well, you think to yourself, I guess I am. So you say, "Johnny, you're still in basic math. Have you not progressed?" Johnny says, "I am taking mathematics at Harvard. How dare you doubt me? I'm paying them money, and they are teaching me. You don't have to know division to be going to harvard!" And with a harumph he walks away.

Two years later, you run into Johny at a home improvement store. You smile as you walk by, not really wanting to say anything and get the same treatment as you got before. You say "Hi" and Johnny replies "Hi" back to you. Then you realize that the item you are shopping for is near where he stands. So, not wanting to leave without obtaining the item you came for, you start looking for it on the shelves. Johnny says to you, "I'm still going to Harvard." "That's nice" you reply, letting it show that you really don't believe it, and for good cause. You learned enough by reading math books while doing janitorial work to know more than he did last time. And then Johnny says "You don't need to believe in division to go to Harvard." This is just too much. You've learned more in a few hours than Johnny refuses to believe in several years. "Division is part of Mathematics, Johnny.", you say. Johnny is indignant and says "But I'm going to Harvard and I'm a student of Mathematics." "They may be taking your money Johnny, but that doesn't make you a student of Mathematics", you blurt out, frustrated by his obvious ignorance. And then Johnny shows even more ignorance, "I know a man who started at Harvard learning mathematics and died within 2 days because of a car crash but he was still a student of Mathematics." The analogy is horrible, and Johnny clearly has used a bad comparison. Does he really think that 2 days of enrollment at college with the poor man who died in a car crash would show the same results as Johnny's supposed several years of attendance at Harvard? This is an insult to the man in the car crash and an insult to you. You simply walk away, Johnny being happy with his own delusion.

In the same way, many claim today to be Christians, disciples of Jesus Christ. But after dozens of years they don't know or believe in the basics of the Bible, and use the story of the man on the cross next to Jesus to justify their discipliship or lack thereof.

Many pastors preach and teach a gospel not of God. But we are to be disciples of Jesus Christ, not of some pastor, preacher, or famous pseudo-Christian. The Bible says:

Mat 28:17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The disciples were to teach all nations. They were to baptize them. They were to teach them to observe all things that Jesus Christ had commanded them.

Are you learning the things that Jesus Christ instructed? Or are you being taught books by famous authors who are promoting things that are not commanded by Jesus Christ?

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. - Jesus Christ speaking to Saul, see Act 26:18, see Salvation through Jesus Christ.
