Abraham, the Syrian
Abram, a Syrian, was the son of Terah, a brother to Nahor and Haran. He was born in Ur of the Chaldees. Abram married Sarai. Later God changed Abram's name to Abraham.
Abram/Abraham set in History
From the creation of the earth until Abram's birth was about 2600 years. Abram was born about 942 years after the flood and 425 years before Moses was born. Abram died at age 170, roughly 250 years before Moses was born. There are a few additions in calculation of years and there is some guessing with a few years plus or minus. The most common mistake people make in calculating how many years since creation that Abram was born is in using the King James translation which is translated from a corrupted Masoretic text. I used the Greek Septuagint which appears to be correct, being confirmed by Josephus, the apostle Paul and evidently the same source or correct copy that Jesus quoted from.
For more information and longer explanation, see "Were the Pyramids built before the flood" a great 31 minute explanation by Nathan Hoffman.
Genealogy - Abram, the Tenth from Noah
Abram was the tenth generation from Noah. Abram was the son of Terah. Terah was the son of Nahor. Nahor was the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber (from which the word "Hebrew" comes from, the son of Salah, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah (1057-2007 after creation).
Noah lived from about 1057 years after creation to 2007 years after creation for total of 950 years, see Gen 9:29. Abram was born 2600 AM (after creation) and died 2775 (age 175). They never would have met each other. If you use King James, NKJ, NIV etc bibles, they got the ages of the parents wrong when their sons were born in Genesis 11 due to corrupted Masoretic text and it makes you think Noah would have been alive at same time as Abram. This is erroneous and makes this translation self-contradict.
Abram's Brother Dies
Terah had Abram, Nahor and Haran in Ur of the Chaldees. Terah had more than one wife. Terah also had Sarai as his daughter, through a wife different than his son Abram. Haran died and left behind his son Lot. After Haran died, Terah and his descendents went to Haran.
Abram and his Brother Find Wives
Abram married Sarai and Nahor married Milcah. Sarai was barren.
Abram Obeys and Moves to Plain of Moreh in Canaan
Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran with Sarai and Lot. Abram went through the land and came to Sichem and the plain of Moreh.
God's Promise to Abram
At age 75, Abram left Haran for Canaan. Gen 12:1. At this time, God promised to Abram to make of him a great nation, to bless him and make his name great and for him to be a blessing. This was the year 2675 AM. It is an important point in time, and the apostle Paul references this in Galations 3:16,17, saying
Gal 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
The promise was made to Abram in Genesis 12:2:
Gen 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Genesis 12:7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
Abram built an altar unto the LORD in the plain of Moreh where God appeared to him.
Abram Moves to Mountain East of Bethel
Abram moved to a mountain with Bethel on the West and Hai on the East and built an altar unto the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD.
Abram Heads South - Short Trip to Egypt
Abram headed South and kept going into Egypt because there was a famine in Canaan.
Abram Asks Sarai to Help Him
Abram was afraid that people might kill him and take his beautiful wife, so he asked Sarai to tell people that she was his sister (which she was). Sarai was his father's daughter by another wife.
Gen 12:15+ The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.
Pharaoh king of Egypt was plagued by God because of his interest in Sarai. Pharaoh , rebuked Abraham, because he might have married Sarai. Pharaoh sent Abram away.
Abram Leaves Egypt for the Altar
Abram was rich in cattle, silver and gold. He traveled to to the South of Canaan and eventually ended up at the altar he built between Bethel and Hai.
10 Years in Canaan
After 10 years in Canaan (and after his brief trip to Egypt), Sarai gave Hagar to Abram to wife. At age 77 (Gen 17:24) Abram had a son Ishmael (through his wife's handmaiden). This was not the son of promise.
In Genesis 15:6, is one of the most powerful verses in the scriptures. It reads:
Genesis 15:4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Thus from this scripture we learn that Abram was saved by faith in God, and that this is how we obtain righteousness unto salvation.
This scripture is so important that the apostle Paul uses it to explain salvation through faith:
Romans 4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Abram's Wife and Children
When Abram was 99 years old, God changed his name from Abram to Abraham. At age 100, Abraham had a son Isaac by Sarai (her name later changed to Sarah), as God had promised him. This was the promised son.
Ishmael Mocks Isaac
Isaac was weaned at age 5, and at this time was mocked by Isaac, - thus starting the 400 years of affliction. See Gen 15:13. Abraham is now 105. The year is now about 2705 AM, 30 years after the promise was given.
Gen 15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
God showing his patience because the wickedness of the Amorites wasn't full, so he didn't kick the Amorites out of Canaan yet.
So now that 30 years had elapsed, and the persecution begun, it would be 400 years until the law was given, as the apostle Paul said. So this means the exodus of the children of Israel occurred 3105 AM. You can also calculate from the age of Jacob when he went into Egypt that the Israelites spend 215 years in Egypt, not the 400-430 years as some "experts" claim. They mistakenly use the self-contradictory Masoretic text.
Abraham Wiling to Offer Isaac
Abraham was willing to offer Isaac, the son of promise, to the LORD. Great faith. As another example of how the scripture explains the scripture, Paul writes of this:
Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
Wow, what faith!
Abraham Marries AgainAfter Sarah passed away, Abram married Keturah, Gen 25:21. Besides Ishmael and Isaac, Abraham had Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. But Abraham's inheritance all went to his promised son Isaac. Abraham lived for 175 years and died about 2775 years after creation.
Abrahams Descendents to Moses
Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac had a son Jacob. Jacob had many sons, one of which was Levi. Levi had Kohath. Kohath had Amram. Amram married Jochebed and had Aaron and Moses. Abraham was the great, great, great, great grandfather of Moses.
Abram's Dad Dies in Haran
When Abraham was 135 years old, Terah, Abram's Dad, died in Haran in Canaan. Terah lived 205 years.
Haran where Terah eventually died. Yes, Haran is the name of the place where they stayed and also the name of Abram's deceased brother. Maybe they named the place in memory of him?
Father of Faith
Many call Abraham the father of faith. Abraham was a father of many nations. Abraham had faith and believed God.
