I had read in the Old Testament about people sacrificing animals to atone for their sins. This was odd to me. I have never sacrificed an animal. So I learned a little about the commandments given to the Jews regarding sacrifices. I was surprised to find out that the concept of sacrifice was around before the ten commandments. I read about this as early as Cain and Abel. I believe the offering was that same as a sacrifice. If you perceive a difference, then please let me know ASAP.
Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
But the main point that I would like to share with you is that no amount of animal sacrifices can ever purge us from our sin. This is why Jesus Christ is so important. He is the perfect sacrifice who offered himself once on our behalf to forever purge us from our sin.
The apostle Paul wrote to the Hebrews about the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ who offered himself once for our sins. Paul goes into more detail in his letter to the Hebrews.
Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
Since I have faith in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ to atone for my sins, I do not have to try to earn my way into heaven or sacrifice my way into heaven. It is impossible. If someone tries to burden you with hard rules that are not in the Bible and get you to earn your way into heaven, then please read about the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ and put all your faith in Him. Jesus Christ is able to save you.
A brief overview of what I learned: Jesus Christ created heaven and earth (John 1:3), he has authority over all (John 13:3), he has given commandments (Matthew 5:22) and we have all broken at least one commandment (sinned) and disobeyed God (Romans 3:23). As a result, we are all sinners and in bondage to sin (John 8:34). Jesus Christ offered his holy, harmless, undefiled life once as a sacrifice to atone for our sins (Hebrews 7:26-27) to redeem us from sin (Titus 2:14) and if we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we will receive power, born again, (John 1:12) be redeemed, forgiven, reconciled to God, baptized by Jesus Christ in the Holy Ghost (Matthew 3:11), have works that glorify God and enjoy eternity in heaven with Him.
