I'm sure you have heard about Moses and how he received the ten commandments on a mountain. These commandments were written on two tablets of stone. The commandments give moral code and a contract or covenant between God and the Hebrews/Jews.
This covenant that God made with the Hebrews is often called the Old Covenant or Old Testament. You may know as well as I, that a covenant or contract is legally binding. And breaking a contract can allow penalties or fines to be imposed. You can learn more about sin (the transgression of the commandments) and see that sin arises because there were commandments given by someone in authority.
In Oregon, if someone passes a law that says you cannot throw burning material out of a car, then you can be fined or penalized if (while in Oregon) you break this law. The law is enforcable because it was instituted by someone in authority. If you or I transgress (or sin/break the law) than we can suffer punishment.
Now pretend this: a bum on the street said that from now on, everyone was to allow him to stay in their homes rent free and give him food wherever he went under penalty of going to hell. You and I know that a bum has no power to create law in Oregon or anyone else. The bum does not have authority. The bum cannot enforce his law. The bum cannot impose the penalty (send someone to hell). So the simple lesson is that someone who is not in authority has no power to create laws or enforce them. Their decrees are not legally binding and can be disregarded.
Mat_10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
A brief overview of what I learned: Jesus Christ created heaven and earth (John 1:3), he has authority over all (John 13:3), he has given commandments (Matthew 5:22) and we have all broken at least one commandment (sinned) and disobeyed God (Romans 3:23). As a result, we are all sinners and in bondage to sin (John 8:34). Jesus Christ offered his holy, harmless, undefiled life once as a sacrifice to atone for our sins (Hebrews 7:26-27) to redeem us from sin (Titus 2:14) and if we put our faith in Jesus Christ, we will receive power, born again, (John 1:12) be redeemed, forgiven, reconciled to God, baptized by Jesus Christ in the Holy Ghost (Matthew 3:11), have works that glorify God and enjoy eternity in heaven with Him.
