Disciples of Jesus Christ

Disciples of Jesus Christ acknowledge their sin, believe that Jesus Christ is God, keep the commandments of God and love the brethren.

Acknowledging Sin

The disciples believed that they were sinners. Sin is breaking the law / the commandments of God.

1Jn_3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
1Jn_5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

We have all broken God's commandments, like when Adam and Eve broke the commandment of God to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. One of the purposes of preaching is to help people realize that we are sinners.

Joh_15:22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.

Realizing we are sinners helps us realize our need for the forgiveness of our sins by God. Here are some scriptures which show the disciples acknowledging their sin(s):

Rom_3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom_3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Rom_3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Rom_6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Believe Jesus Christ is God

The Bible is very clear about the actions of the disciples. The disciples believed Jesus Christ is God. If you were like I was, then these verses would be confusing if you don't believe Jesus Christ is God (the Christ, The Messiah, The Saviour). The Bible was written by Hebrews / Jews and not by any Gentiles that I know of. I believe that this should be remembered when reading the Bible. A good understanding of the Old Testament is important in understanding the New Testament. So here are the scriptures about the disciples believing Jesus Christ is God.

Joh_11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
Joh_20:28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Some people don't understand that the Jews believed that the Messiah is God. And so when the Jews said "I believe thou are the Christ/Messiah" then they are saying they believe Jesus Christ is God. The old testament refers many, many times to God (the father as some say) to being their Saviour. Even pagans back then knew that the Saviour is God and was to be worshiped.

Mat_2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Act_2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Joh_11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

The first commandment is that "The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: " So when Jesus Christ said that He is one with God, the Father in Him, and He in the Father..well then the Jews knew he was saying without a doubt that He is God. And so they took up stones to stone him. They said he was blaspheming for making himself God.

Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

Disciples Keeping the Law / The Ten Commandments

There are many scriptures showing the disciples keeping the commandments of God. Now the scripture is clear that we are not saved by "works" or by keeping the commandments. We are only saved by the grace of God and through faith. But salvation and keeping the commandments of God are not in opposition. For example, we may break the law, but repent and a judge have mercy on us (saved by the grace of the judge and our repentance) but that in no way says it's ok to continue to break the law, rather the opposite. We have then acknowledged our wrong and must repent and turn to do what is righteous.

Liars Who Claim to be Disciples of Jesus Christ, But Are Not

The Bible is very clear (black and white as some say) about who is a disciple of Jesus Christ.

The Bible calls people who claim to be disciples of Jesus Christ, but don't fit the criteria: "liars". I believe this is a fulfillment of prophecy:

Deu_33:29 Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.
1Jn_1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1Jn_2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn_2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
1Jn_4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
1Jn_5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

Disciples Who do God's Will are Mother and Brethren to Jesus Christ

Mat 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
