Issues regarding Bible interpretation

  1. Interpretation
    1. Definition: the action of explaining the meaning of something
    2. Proper interpretation of Bible 2 Timothy 3:16
      1. profitable for doctrine
      2. profitable for reproof
      3. profitable for correction
      4. profitable for instruction in righteousness
      5. perfects the man of God
      6. makes man of God throughly furnished unto all good works
  2. Causes of misinterpretation
    1. The person reading
      1. Unlearned 2 Peter 3:16
      2. Don't know God so it is easy to assign the wrong meaning. 1 John 2:4
      3. 2Ti 3:13  But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
        1. Self willed, not born of God
        2. Living in sin and don't want to admit their wrong doing so lie about scripture. Gainsaying Jude 1:11
        3. Reward from men, looking for reward
          1. Approval of men
          2. Jud 1:11  Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
        4. Born of another's will, not of God. Idolizing another. Don't want to admit persons' fault. Cults
        5. Hate the righteous. Their works are evil. Jude 1:11
        6. Wrest scripture, change meaning to justify themselves rather than admit sin 2 Peter 3:16
          1. Wresting scripture is work. They have to wrest other scriptures too and work hard to explain their meaning and answer all the hypocrisies and questions that arise.
            1. Advertising false meaning in publications, internet, radio etc to make it common
            2. Taking scripture away from context by telling a story and then slipping in one or two verses to try to change meaning.
            3. Brainwashing - washing something out of brain - Repeating false meaning over and over again and repeating it with scripture
            4. Deceiving people about other scripture which their understanding contradicts
            5. Writing books trying to convince people and let people know their groups "proper understanding"
            6. Writing hymns to be sung at church to repeat false teachings
            7. Explaining their hypocrisy as they say and teach one thing and do another.
    2. Scriptures
      1. Easy to understand scripture - can be understood first and used as basis for more difficult scripture since God does not contradict himself
      2. Understanding is sequential.
        1. Joh 20:9  For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
        2. 2Pe 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
      3. Scripture is basis for understanding life and work of God
        1. Rom 4:3  For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
      4. Scriptures say about themselves
        1. 2Ti 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
        2. Scripture cannot be broken.
          1. Joh 10:35  If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
        3. Scripture will be fulfilled
          1. Joh 17:12  While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
        4. Jesus Christ explains scripture regarding himself
          1. Luk 4:21  And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
        5. Gospels explain fulfillment of scripture
          1. Mar 12:10  And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:
          2. Mar 15:28  And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
          3. Joh 2:22  When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
          4. Joh 7:38  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
        6. No prophecies are of private interpretation or understanding
          1. 2Pe 1:20  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
        7. Apostles give proper understanding of previous scripture as they were instructed directly by Jesus the Christ
          1. Luk 24:45  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
          2. Act 8:34  And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?  Act 8:35  Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
        8. Given by the Father to understand
          1. Joh 6:65  And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.  Joh 6:66  From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
        9. Not profitable for flesh but for the spirit
          1. Joh 6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
      5. Some scriptures are hard to be understood 2 Peter 3:16
        1. Uses words we don't know the meaning of - need to look up word in dictionary used by translators
        2. Concepts we are not familiar with - we need time to think about it.
        3. Scripture references previous stories in Bible we are not familiar with - we need to read and understand those stories properly first
          1. We think we understand the stories the scripture references but our understanding of those is in error. Matthew 9:13
        4. Other people are pressuring us to agree with them. They hinder us. Galations 5:7
        5. Takes time to figure them out
          1. Mat 13:19  When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
          2. Joh 6:60  Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
          3. Mat 7:7  Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
          4. Mat 7:8  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
          5. Jesus opens scriptures to us.
            1. Luk 24:32  And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
      6. Can be used as basis for similar translation of original text to passages that are more contentious
      7. Bible Translations
        1. Translation in our native tongue are easier to understand
        2. Bad Translations
          1. Mistranslation due to evil intent of translators
          2. Some translations made to suit specific religious denominations
          3. Inconsistent in translating the same words as they want different meanings and so are not consistent in their translation
          4. Not typical with other translations specifically where their doctrines differ with other churches
          5. Add to their Bibles by inserting things that they want in order to get you to come to their understanding
          6. Leave some verses out of the Bible that oppose their teachings
          7. Scripture will contradict if translation and/or understanding is not correct
            1. Joh 10:35  If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
    3. Other People
      1. Mainstream religion
        1. Popular misunderstandings influence our thinking and make it a struggle to be honest about scripture
      2. People we fellowship with
        1. People who deceive who love their deceptions are around us 2 Peter 2:13
      3. False Prophets
        1. Looking to teach things to people with itching ears
        2. Seeking money for their preaching
      4. Scribes - original text was not copied correctly - human error without evil intent
      5. Translators
        1. Translators have purposefully changed the translation to fit their beliefs
        2. Translators leaving out verses in Bible because they don't like them.
