The Seventh Day Sabbath
The seventh day sabbath is the seventh day after working 6 days.
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
No, I am not of the 7th day adventist religion. Those people worship on Saturday, not on the 7th day. They worship on the 7th day of the Gregorian calendar week, Saturday. This is not the 7th day sabbath written about in the Bible.
Some people call the 7th day sabbath a lunar sabbath to distinguish it as the sabbaths calculated by the new moon. When the sabbath was given by God in Genesis 2:3, there was no Babylonian calendar, no Greek calendar, No Julian calendar, no Gregorian calendar. It was very simple. After six days of work you rested on the seventh day.
With God's month beginning with the new moon, this was a day of worship and rest. So on the first day of the month, we rest. On the next six days we work, as God worked six days.
Sabbath Described in Genesis
Exodus 16:1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt....And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily...And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt: And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?... And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning....
I've omitted verses for your convenience. I encourage you to read this chapter and the whole Bible for that matter.
In Exodus, on the 15th day of the month, God gave commandment that they were to gather the manna for six days and rest on the 7th day. They would find out in the evening (the beginning of a day). So if you work six days (days 16 through 21), then the next sabbath would be on the 22th. The scriptures are for our learning. There is a reason why the Bible records on which day of the month they were told things and which day were sabbaths. God is not the author of confusion.
Exodus 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Exodus23:12 Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.
Exodus 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
Exodus 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
It's interesting how some people want to be a child of Abraham but not a child of Israel. Weren't Abraham and Israel both children of God?
Exodus 34:21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.
Exodus 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.
Lev_23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Ezekiel 46:1 Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
Disciples of Jesus Christ Observed 7th Day Sabbath
Mark 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Matthew 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
There are tons of verses which refer to the 7th day sabbath and I have not listed them all.
I have come to love the seventh day sabbath. It is a day of rest. After working 6 days at my job I can sit down to the scriptures and read and learn more about God. This is a blessing and gift of God, to work 6 days and have the 7th day to rest. Thanks God :)
