New Moon Day

New moon day is the first day of God's month. The full moon begins near sunset and travels from East to West in the night. After the night turns to day and the sun has risen is the first day of God's month, new moon day. The scriptures teach that new moon is a holy feast day.

New Moon Day is Holy Day

First, I have found according to scripture that the first day of God's month, new moon day, is a holy day. Here are some scriptures which tell us this:

Ezekiel 46:1  Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
2 Kings 4:22  And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.
Psalms 81:3  Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.
Isaiah 66:23  And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

When is New Moon?

It took me years to sort through tradition and finally learn from scripture whether the new moon was a full moon or a crescent moon. My first inclination was that the full moon was new moon. But I was hampered by Jewish tradition which states that the new moon is the first crescent. For over a year I followed this tradition. Then I was told that the dark moon (not even first crescent) was new moon. But this person could not show me any scripture or give valid reasons.

I finally I found scripture that tells when the new moon occurs. It is recorded in Luke 23.

Luke records in his gospel the events surrounding passover. Passover according to scripture is to take place each year on 14th day of the first month. Abib is the first month, so Passover is on Abib 14th. Passover is on the first month (Abib) of the year on the 14th day, as recorded in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers etc. Here are scriptures showing when passover is to be kept each year.

Exodus 12:1  And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
Leviticus 23:5  In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S passover.
Numbers 9:5  And they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at even in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel.

These scriptures are clear. I don't know of anyone across many denominations that doubts their validity. The passover celebration is clearly connected according to scripture to Abib 14th. The 14th day of Abib is the 14th day of the month. So half the month has passed when passover celebration takes place. Jesus Christ knew when passover was, since he is the Word of God. He knew when he was going to die for the sins of the world, on Passover.

Jesus' Crucifixion and Solar Eclipse

Now we jump forward thousands of years and the Jews are living in Israel, the promised land of Canaan. And Romans are occupying the land. The promised Messiah has been born, Emanuel, God with us. Jesus Christ has lived, fulfilled prophecy and preached the gospel of the kingdom of God. He has been condemned to death by his own people. Luke records that there was a solar eclipse when Jesus Christ was crucified.

Luke 23:44  And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

Daylight is divided into twelve hours. "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world." - John 11:9. So the 6th hour to the 9th hour would be from about 12:00 PM in Gregorian time to 3:00 PM.

Solar eclipses only occur during the dark phase of the moon - when the moon is between the earth and the sun. When the moon is between the earth and the sun, then we "see" a dark phase of the moon (the sun is shining on the other side of the moon). So scripture shows that the dark phase of the moon marks the MIDDLE of the months. Here is a picture showing the earth between the sun and the moon. You can imagine a shadow where the moon blocks the sunlight at midday from reaching the city of Jerusalem in Israel.

A Little Deductive Reasoning to Find Beginning of Month

Since the dark phase is in the middle of the month, then what phase is the moon in the beginning of the months? The moon was between the earth and the sun, blocking the light of the sun to the earth. This was on the 14th day of the month.

The beginning of the first day of the month was 13.5 days earlier than the beginning of the solar eclipse. So what was the phase of the moon on Abib 1, the first of the month?

The phases of the moon are according to the moon's position in relation to the earth and moon. It takes 29.5 days for the moon to completely travel one revolution around the earth.

This means that the moon takes 14.75 days to go from full moon to dark moon and 14.75 days to go back to full moon again.

Since the middle of the month was the dark phase of the moon, a solar eclipse at noon, then ~14.75 days earlier would have been the full moon and night time. The moon would have been on the opposite side of the earth and full, bright. When the sun was down, and the sky was black, we would have seen the full moon. The moon would have ruled over the night sky.

Genesis 1:17  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Abib 14th, noon, would be like Abib 14.25 because it was half way through the day and the day is only half of a calendar day. If you remove 0.75 days (of the 14.75 days until the moon was full), then it would be Abib 13 in the middle of the night. And 14 days previous to this, let's look at a calendar based on the scripture:

month of Abib

14.75 days before the moon was completely dary, the moon would have been on the other side of the sky and we would see the side of the moon facing the sun, fully illuminated. Here is a picture:

full moon

If you can imagine being in Israel, at night, 14.75 days earlier from when Jesus Christ was crucified and looking directly up in the night sky in the middle of the night, the moon would have been full and bright.

The moon would have been on the opposite side of the earth as the sun. The night time (darkness) of the last day of the previous month (the month before Abib 1) would have displayed the full moon through the night watches. The full moon would have ruled over the night sky. The day following was new moon day, Abib 1.

Conclusively, the full moon marks the end of the previous month and the beginning of the new month. This is shown in scriptures.

Seventh Day Sabbaths Determined by New Moon Day

Feasts of the LORD by Day of the Month

All the feasts of the LORD are based on the number of the day of the month which depends on the day of the new moon. Following the first day of the month are 6 working days followed by the seventh day sabbath. The book of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers show this. As a starter: Exodus 12, Leviticus 23, Numbers 9, Numbers 28, Numbers 33, Deuteronomy 16, Joshua 5...

As a 2x2 I wasn't taught nor did I know anyone that believed in the holy days of God. Many even thought and taught that Sunday was sabbath.

Using Reason To Understand The New Moon Day as Holy

If you read about the feasts of the LORD, you will find they coincide with the 7th day sabbaths very well. Obviously the sabbath of rest was the seventh day, the day after six working days. And the sabbaths fell on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. So if you follow this through, you will notice that the 8th has seven days preceding. The Bible does not say rest on the 8th day, but on the seventh. If you worship on the day of new moon, then this is a day of worship and rest. And then you work on the 2nd through the 7th day (6 days), then this will bring you to rest the seventh day (the day after the sixth working day). If you rest on the 8th day then work 6 days, then the next day of rest (the seventh day since starting work), you will be observing the sabbath of rest on the 15th. Working on days 16 through 21 (6 days), you will rest on day 22. And working on days 23 through 28 (6 days), you would rest on day 29. Then on the 30th day if it isn't new moon you would work. If that day is new moon, then you worship and rest and the months repeat in like manner.

The new moon day as holy, and the seventh day of rest as described by the Bible gives you 5 days of worship and rest every month. This method of worshiping on the new moon harmonizes with the scripture that shows God's calendar and all the days of sabbath and feasts.

The day of new moon may land on any day of the Gregorian calendar (Sunday through Saturday) since the most common calendar in the world completely ignores the moon which God created for signs, seasons, days and years. So you cannot look at the day of the week on any pagan calendar to find new moon. But those of you who are hunters may find on your pagan calendars the days of full moon, complete with time of exact full moon! So funny. So that day of the full moon is the new moon. If the full moon occurs on a monday, then the folowing Mondays will be sabbaths, days of rest until the next new moon. I think it is ironic that on the pagan calendars it has full moon days marked too, so none of us have an excuse.
