The Moon - God's Creation
The moon was created by God on the fourth day of creation as recorded in Genesis 1:16. The Sun, Moon and stars form a magnificent time piece of the Creator of Heaven and Earth.
Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
Purpose of the Moon
The lesser light is the moon. The moon amongst the other created lights was for signs, seasons, days and years. The moon was made for light for the earth. The lesser light, the moon, was made to rule the night.
By definition, the night is when the sun is not ruling the sky. When the sun is in the sky, the sun rules the day. By definition, the day is not night, and the night is not day.
Moon Rules the Night
After the sunset, and when the sky becomes dark by the absence of the sun's shining, then the moon rules the night. The moon can only rule the night when it is not day, when the sun is not shining to make it day.
The Path of the Moon
The earth travels around the sun, taking about 365 days to do so. The earth orbits the sun. The moon travels around the earth as the earth orbits the sun. From a perspective hundreds of miles above the North pole of the earth, the earth is traveling counter-clockwise around the sun. And from this same perspective, the moon is traveling counter-clockwise around the earth.
The moon orbits the earth. It takes the moon approximately 29.5 earth days to go around the earth.
The Month - The Moonth
The word "month" is taken from the word moon. God's calendar month starts with new moon day. One calendar month ends when a new moon, or new month begins. Month, think moonth.
It wasn't till fairly recent in time that pagan calendars were made that disassociated the new moon with a new month. But even now, it is marked on many calendars when the full moon occurs. It is useful for hunters to know because the moon is full over the entire night, making it easier to see at night.
The Moon's Orbit Around Earth
The plane of the moon's orbit around the earth is not the same as the earth's plane around the sun. If it were, then we would have a solar eclipse every month when the moon was between the earth and the sun. But we don't. Every so many months or years we have at least partial solar eclipses (when moon blocks sunlight) over different areas of the earth.
Seeing the Moon
For most nights, the moon can be seen. It may rise early in the early dark morning hours when the sun has not peaked over the horizon. Or the moon may rise as the sun is just setting.
The moon is not always visible at night. The times when the moon is not visible at night make for the darkest of nights. Especially in shorter summer nights when the moon is between the sun and the earth, the moon cannot be seen at night. This is when the stars are most visible. If you go out in the middle of the dark night (not at 12:00 PM, but in the middle of the time of darkness), and look straight up at the night stars, you will see the stars, the constellations. You will be looking directly away from the sun. The passage of these stars and which constellations are directly overhead shows which part of the year you are in. The sky is a magnificent time piece made by Yahweh, God, our Creator, the Creator of heaven and earth.
During other days of the month, the moon is full and shines throughout the night time. The fainter stars are not so easy to see because of the brightness of the moon.
