No Church Buildings
2x2s say that their should be no church buildings. Yet 2x2s have convention property in trust funds along with meeting barns, dormitories, dining facilities and kitchens.
Some people mistakenly believe that the 2x2 religion was recently started and meets in homes because they don't have a church building yet. Nope, this is not the case. So far, they claim church buildings are of the devil. Now what do you think of them?
Brainwashed as a Child
I was brainwashed as a child - taught that we didn't believe in church buildings. I was taught that church buildings were of the devil. I was told also that our annual convention at Boring Oregon was justified because the meeting shed was used for other purposes at other times of the year. I traveled the 50 states I saw this wasn't true for all convention grounds. There was church property owned by overseers in trust funds along with meeting sheds, dining halls and kitchens used only for conventions for one or two weeks out of the year.
Early 2x2 Church Buildings
After I left the meetings I learned that early workers owned portable meeting halls. They would set them up, invite people to come and then take them down and move to the next town. There was even a newspaper article about people who burned up one of the meeting sheds and were sued by workers to pay for it.
Early workers also had tent meetings.
So overseers and workers rent grange halls, community buildings, (even church buildings), school auditoriums and claim that this is OK.
Real Reason Behind "No Church Buildings"
I think the real reason behind the "no church buildings" rule are as follows:
Verses Misused by Workers
As with many cults, the workers like to have some verse to quote to sound like their ideas are coming from the bible. Matthew 17 is the only verse I know that even comes close to being usable.
Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
If you go to a workers' "gospel" meeting, you may hear some ranting and raving that goes something like this: "Peter was wanting to build a church building, but God set Peter straight, 'Listen to Jesus your example preacher, no church buildings!'".
In Matthew 17 that Peter didn't ask to build a church building. He wanted to build a tabernacle.
Consider king David when he wanted to build a house for the LORD. Did the prophets rail on him that there were to be no church buildings?
2 Samuel 7:2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.
We know after reading the rest of second Samuel that David prepared building materials for the house the LORD and his son Solomon built the temple. Is Nathan the prophet going to hell? Are David and Solomon going to hell?
People Who Worship in Church Buildings are Going to Hell?
Workers also believe that people who worship in church buildings are going to hell along with their preachers. In doing so, the overseers and workers condemn the disciples of Jesus Christ who worshiped in a church building - namely the temple of God.
Luke 24:50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
Church Buildings are Sign of the Devil
Many workers will tell you that preachers who have their own church buildings are of the devil. However the Bible teaches that s sign of a false preacher is their lies. And workers lie all the time. Not only have the workers made up the rule of no church buildings, but they have condemned others to hell based on their rule.
I believe the workers goal is to turn others away from going to a church service and listening to more accurate teachings then the workers could ever give about God.
The Temple of God
Many devout followers of God worshiped the LORD in the temple of God. One example is Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, who served in the temple of God.
Luke 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
A person believing in the workers would have to say that Zacharias was going to hell because he served in the temple of God.
Disciples Met in Synagogues
Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
Jesus Christ himself preached in synagogues. So if you believed the workers that people who preach in church buildings are going to hell, then you would have to condemn the Messiah! Oh the trouble people get into, the hypocrisy of making man-made rules.
Apostles Preached in Synagogues
Acts 13:5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.
Clearly the idea that church buildings are of the devil is not something taught in the scripture. The Bible does speak against telling lies though.
