2x2 Core Belief: Meetings in the Home
A 2x2 core belief is meetings in the home. 2x2s claim to believe that Christians who don't worship in the homes of their overseer-approved elders are of the devil. I believe the primary purpose of workers teaching the meetings in the home rule is to keep people away from fellowshiping with Christians.
Interestingly enough, in the early days, William Irvine taught that only the workers could be saved. The initial teaching of William Irvine was that you had to sell everything and give it to him and become a worker to be "saved". From what I've read, there were no meetings in the home. William Irvine changed policy a few years after he started his religion.
William Irvine changed some rules from the Faith Mission that he use to belong to. The Faith Mission encouraged people to fellowship with Christians, but William Irvine despised Christians and so didn't want them to meet with Christians. To keep them separate, he had them meet in homes instead.
Notes from Workers Regarding Meetings in Home
Here is a quote from a popular worker, Jack Carroll:
Jack Carroll San Diego Convention 10/6/51 "We make no secret of the fact that we are deliberately and purposefully teaching men and women the world over how to do without the hireling ministry and the public building, to worship God in spirit and in truth as those early Christians did in homes consecrated to God as recorded in the New Testament."
Scriptures Workers Misuse on Ignorant Folks
There are scriptures that workers misuse in order to teach their rule of only meeting in homes. Please note that they say "meetings in home", not "worshiping in homes", because they don't worship Jesus Christ. A common passage for workers to (mis)use is:
Luk 22:7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
I'm glad that they use this as their proposed "support" of their teaching of men and tradition of meetings in home because this scripture doesn't support their rules. I would like to give you a number of glaring contradictions between the passage above and what they practice:
The list above is by no means complete. It just shows some of the most obvious contradictions between this passage and the 2x2s practice of meeting in homes on Sundays.
What about people in the old testament? Were they sinners for fellowshipping by the tabernacle or in the temple of God (approved of God)?
2x2 workers don't really care if homes are consecrated. They knowingly have kept Sunday morning meeting services in homes of fathers who sexually abused their daughters. See Debi Gordon
What about the Jewish disciples of Jesus Christ who believed in God and worshiped in the temple, as recorded by the Bible?
Act 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
What about Jesus Christ preaching in the temple of God? His house of prayer?
Luk 19:45 And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, and could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
WORKERS choose people who are popular in their religion, have money and a home and approach them to make them ELDERS. WORKERS condition or groom these people and grant them favors in return for the person being an ELDER. See also Elders.
SUNDAY MORNING MEETINGS is a primary example of their belief in MEETINGS IN THE HOME. They also have weekly "Bible studies" that are held in homes of followers. See also Sunday Morning MEETINGS
Are MEETINGS IN THE HOME Required by Bible?
There are no commandments of God, no inferred teachings that followers MUST or are commanded to worship in a home. In fact, the early disciples met at the temple in Jerusalem and the Jewish synagogues.
The Bible is not focused on which building you must worship in, but the 2x2s are focused on only meeting in a home. Passing around bread and wine to remember Christ is only allowed by the 2x2 workers to happen in a home in a meeting led by an elder. It's about control of the FRIENDS by the WORKERS, idolatry of the WORKERS and outward means of conformity.
What the Bible Teaches
There are three feast days or festivals that God gave in which men were to present themselves to the LORD and the 2x2s don't keep these at all. Also, the Passover was kept in the home, but 2x2s don't in any way keep the passover.
2x2s Rent Buildings
The 2x2s themselves rent churches, schools etc to have their "fellowship" in for some GOSPEL MEETINGS, CONVENTIONS, SPECIAL MEETINGS and for funerals.
Primary Reason for Meeting in Homes
The primary reason that I can see for 2x2s to meet in homes is for control. WORKERS appoint watchful ELDERS to listen to the testimonies, make "corrections" and to keep the FRIENDS away from Christians and people who would tell them the truth about Jesus Christ. Also, with home being private property, it gives them legal grounds to forbid someone to come to MEETINGS if they are "causing problems".
The second reason I can see that 2x2s meet in homes is the flexibility to combat the high turnover rate in members. With new people coming into the religion and many people leaving the religion, the WORKERS move the meetings move from house to house. Having meetings in homes gives them flexibility when people quit the religion. More people means more homes available. And when there are less people in an area, they need less homes to meet in. This virtue of flexibility about meetings in homes is to no credit of the 2x2s but a fact that homes are a handy place to meet. Even children meet in homes when socializing with their playmates or having parties.
