Matthew 10: Followed by Workers?
Workers tout the 10th chapter of the four gospels, that Matthew 10, Mark 10, Luke 10 and John 10 define their ministry. But this is another lie.
While in the work at the age of 18, I was taught in about 1 hour of time, the fundamental scripture on which the 2x2 religion was based. This included Matthew 10, Mark 10, Luke 10 and John 10. I call these the "gospel 10s". I was shocked to see years later how as a worker I and my companions never even came close to following Matthew 10, Mark 10, Luke 10 or John 10. Let's look at Matthew 10.
Mat 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
The instructions here of Jesus Christ to the 12 Messianic Jews that he spoke to directly and commanded, were that they should go to the Jews only, "the lost sheep of Israel". As a 2x2 worker, sent by the Oregon 2x2 overseer at the time Howard Mooney, we were sent by Howard to Gentiles. My companion Randy Russell and I were put together to preach in Albany-Corvallis field in Oregon. This did not match Matthew 10 at all.I don't remember a single Jew coming to any of our meetings nor even trying to reach out to Jews.
Moving to the next verse, Matthew 10:7, I think maybe one time I preached that the kingdom of heaven was at hand. Of course, when (and if) I said this, I was thinking of the 2x2 religion being the kingdom of heaven.
And the next verse 8, As a 2x2 worker, I never healed the sick, nor was I ever aware of taught that any other 2x2 workers could or did heal the sick. I have never heard of any 2x2 overseer healing the sick either.
As a 2x2 worker, I never cleansed the lepers, nor was I ever aware of taught that any other 2x2 workers could or did cleanse the lepers.
As a 2x2 worker, I never raised the dead, nor was I ever aware of taught that any other 2x2 workers could or did raise the dead.
As a 2x2 worker, I never casted out devils, nor was I ever aware of taught that any other 2x2 workers could or did cast out devils.
Jesus Christ commanded the 12 apostles, all Messianic Jews, to freely give as they had freely received. As a 2x2 worker, I never charged people for sermons. The followers knew that it was expected of them to provide us with shelter, food, clothing, medical and spending money.
Matthew records in his gospel that the 12 apostles were to "...provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat." This obviously means that they didn't need to save up money for the work that they had been commanded by Jesus Christ and sent by Jesus Christ to do, because, as Jesus Christ said, "the workman is worthy of his meat." or as Luke records in his gospel, chapter 10 verse 7, "...for the labourer is worthy of his hire." (underline by me). Which contradicts the workers teachings on not being "hirelings" as they have often claimed (less so in more recent days) to not be hirelings. See also
These two verses in Matthew 10:9-10 are horribly twisted by the 2x2 overseers to insinuate that people must give everything to the overseers to become a worker until they have no two coats, no money etc". And this is a hallmark of cults to want all your money. Please notice that they refer to Matthew 10 for going out in pairs and not Luke 10 because Luke uses the word "laborer" and "hire" and 2x2s also twist John 10 to claim they are not hirelings. So, to reduce people finding out they are hirelings, they refer to Matthew 10 more instead of Luke 10. See also Sell All
Matthew 10 contain instructions from Jesus Christ to his 12 apostles. And Jesus Christ never commanded the 12 apostles to sell their homes and give all their money to him. Jesus Christ gave instructions that when the 12 apostles went into a town, they were to stay in ONE person's home as long as they were in that town. As a worker, we never did this. We went from home to home. And if you should reply back "Well, Paul the apostle traveled from home to home." Then I would point out that according to the teaching of the OVERSEERS, you must then believe that Paul was a false preacher. It was the OVERSEERS who claim to believe all should follow Matthew 10, not me.
I know it's odd, but 2x2s believe that their preachers must be homeless. And I'm not talking about sleeping on the streets. The basic underlying meaning is that the overseers of the workers forbid them from having a certain dwelling place of their own separate from the 2x2 religion. The overseers need the workers to depend on them for their sustenance so that if a worker has the fear if he/she does something that makes the overseer upset, then the overseer can use the workers' fear of losing their job.
Even the Catholics who share the celibate leaders belief, do not preach that their leaders need to be homeless.
Homeless - Without a home
Leave - Go away from
Defining What 2x2s Mean by "Homeless"
So at the beginning here, let me define what "homeless" means to them. It means that their ministers must not own a home in their own name. They believe it's OK for their ministers to use their funds to build convention buildings on convention grounds though. And they believe that it's OK for their ministers to rent homes to live in.
Perhaps their made-up belief should be stated more accurately as "We believe that our ministers should not own a home in their own name." And why not? Did God teach this? Absolutely not. Read on.
Basic Understanding of the Word "Leave"
If I, "Leave my home to go to the beach", does that mean to you that I no longer have a home? Can I not return to my home? If someone asks me to move to Thailand for some work, will I not have to leave my home? Does that absolutely mean that I have to sell my home in the United States? No, absolutely not. I can leave my home and later return to it.
Try to Find It in the Bible
If you teach that people have to sell their home, then who do you think you are? Oh? You say that it's in the Bible? Hmm. Show it to me. I used to think that preachers had to be without a home. I also used to believe that if they had a home, then they were of the devil. Oh, what hatred that caused. The workers pitted me against the people who could help me. That was cruel of them to preach such vile garbage! But if I'm mistaken, and you think I should believe those Christians are going to hell; if you see that I've got anything wrong on this website, then please type your words of correction and edification into the box below and hit the "Send It" button.
Why do overseers require their workers to be homeless? I don't know for sure, try asking them. I can speculate. If you were an "overseer" and you had people sell everything and give it to you, would you receive more money if they sold their home too?
What does the Bible Say
I looked through the Bible, but couldn't find anything that said that preachers or teachers of the Word of God had to sell their homes and be homeless. If you find conclusive proof in the Bible, then don't delay. Type the scriptures in the box below and click "send it".
If you're going to look in the Bible, you may want to try these phrases and words: sell your home, sell your house, home, house, dwelling, tabernacle, tent
The Disciples Had Homes
Joh 1:38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
Mat 8:14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.
Joh 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Joh 20:3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, and the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
Bible Search on "Homeless Ministry"
If you search through the Bible, you will find Jesus telling us to have faith in God, but not once is the phrase "homeless ministry" used. Zero results on the phrase (searching in KJV, which is the Bible of choice for most 2x2s).
But maybe that is being too particular. Let's search on the word "homeless". Ah, zero results again.
Bible Search on "House"
Wow! We have 1,715 hits! Obviously God doesn't think it's a sin to own a house.
The Bible on Homes
When we read of Noah, Abraham, Moses as righteous men, the Bible doesn't say that they were homeless. Paul the apostle rented a room. I rent a space. People rent apartments. Does that make us homeless?
Were the Apostles Homeless?
Peter was an apostle. He had a house. And a wife.
Mat 8:14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.
And from the book of John
Joh 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
What Homeless Ministry Does Not Mean to 2x2s
2x2s do not believe in ministering to homeless people. They don't run organizations that reach out to people who don't have a home, unless it is the 2x2 workers. 2x2 workers don't want them giving money to others that they could have for themselves.
Is this Homeless Doctrine Arbitrary? If you were to start your own religion and you wanted to distinguish it from others, then you could make up your own rules and call them doctrines. For example, I could say "All ministers must not wear socks." Then you could derive from this that all other ministers that are not part of your "no sock ministry" were false. You could even try to justify it by using scripture about foot washing and supposition that they didn't have socks in Jesus day. If anyone contended, then you could just say that they are proud and not fitting in. But if your ministers had homes to live in and no socks, that would not give you the control over them that this "homeless ministry" idea does.
The Real Reason 2x2 Ministers are "Homeless"
If you were William Irvine, and you wanted to make money, would you make more by having them sell their home and giving it to you? Or having them keep their home and maintain it while they preached in the countryside, traveling around on bicycles? Aha! Of course! You make more money by having them sell everything and give it to you. You don't have to read the Bible to figure that out.
When you look at cults, they like to have rules that weaken the people and give you control over them. Here are some things that you need to control to have total control over them:
After reading scriptures that 2x2s use to justify their rules, I've come to the conclusion based on their behavior that they have the "homeless ministry" rule because it gives their overseers more control over the 2x2 workers. If the workers don't fit in , then the workers lose their income, their housing and food sources all at once.
What Should be LearnedI believe there are several things that should be learned from this cult rule:
