Long Hair and Buns for Professing Women
It is required of professing women that they have long hair (don't cut it) and wear it in a bun. It has been said by Jay Wicks (Oregon worker) that a woman's devotion to God can be seen by how long her hair is.
Here is a worker quote that is similar:
Alan Ashmore Gospel meeting 8/8/65 "I Corinthians 11:10 It is just as much of a shame for a woman to have short hair as for a man to have long hair. We show that we are under subjection by the length of our hair. Women must be under subjection!"
Long hair and buns are fundamental teaching of the 2x2 religion and it is enforced by the teachings and pressure from OVERSEERS, WORKERS and ELDERS. So much so, that some people look for information on this religion by searching on "bun head religion".
One of the first things people notice when they are invited to come to a gospel meeting or Sunday morning meeting is that nearly all the older women wear their hair in a bun.
Professing Women Tired of Long Hair and Buns
Long hair and wearing it in a bun has become a tiresome chore to many professing women. How do I know this? They complain about it to people who are sympathetic. Many professing women don't wear their hair in a bun when the workers are not around to see them. They just put their hair up in a bun for meetings or hurriedly put it up when the workers come over to their homes. It's the first change they make in their outward appearance when they quit being professing. After the 2x2 women quit going to meetings, many radically change their hairdo and cut their hair. This simply shows to me that they had long hair and wore it in a bun to please the overseers and workers.
The only reason many women wear their hair in a bun to meetings is because of the pressure they would get from the overseers, workers and elders and their professing husband for doing what they believe in. Many women don't believe in wearing hair in buns as a sign of 2x2 fellowship. So they do things contrary to what is in their heart. This just makes it a form and means of controlling others.
Jay Wicks preached at Boring, Oregon Convention in about 1990 that the length of a woman's hair showed her submission to God. He didn't earn any points with his personal beliefs there. And you will never find that teaching in the Bible.
Here are some scriptures that we referred to as workers when trying to justify long hair and buns for the women. Please note that at the end of this discussion, Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ, writes "But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God."
1Co 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
Workers teach that women should have long hair and wear it in a bun. This is their custom. If you've ever gone to a gospel meeting, then you've seen all the women wearing their hair in a bun. How do they teach this custom of long hair for women and having their hair in a bun? Many ways, and sometimes in private and definitely in behavioral control.
Here are some thoughts to consider
I simply see these verses as being used to justify some old rule they must have made earlier about women wearing long hair and putting it in a bun. If workers really believed these scriptures, then much in their religion would need to change.
Num_6:5 All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.
