2x2 Religion Dress Code

The outward appearance of 2x2s and the 2x2 religion dress code is learned through time and the approval and disapproval of others based on what you wear.

What the Bible teaches:

1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.

The workers don't teach this in their behavior. Many wealthier men wear expensive wedding bands and suits. I remember some of the 2x2s complaining about my aunt Kathy Lewis (after she got out of the cult) for wearing jewelry. However the jewelry was modest and I think she said her earrings cost her about $5. LOL!!!

There are several important dress appearance requirements among the 2x2s. The outward appearance depends on the norm in that town and the local beliefs.

Here is a rundown of the more enforced rules I learned as a worker:

  1. Workers are to always dress nicer than the followers so the followers know who the workers are. Workers must wear ties when preaching.
  2. More devout followers are to dress nicer than the less devout followers
  3. Elders are to dress nicer than the followers in the meetings so they know who he is
  4. Elders wives are to dress nicer than the women followers
  5. People in the cities are to dress nicer than those in the country
  6. Not dressing like the workers want you to dress is disrespectful to the workers.
  7. Women are never allowed to wear pants to a meeting.
Typical Dress (not always enforced) for Sunday morning meetings in city

  • Overseer (only men allowed to be overseers): Suit, dress shirt, dress shoes and tie, jacket may be ommitted if it's too warm
  • Older workers: Suit, dress shirt, dress shoes and tie, jacket may be ommitted if it's too warm
  • Younger worker: Suit, dress shirt, dress shoes and tie. Jacket may be ommitted if it's too warm.
  • Elders (only men allowed to be elders): Dress shirt and tie. In smaller towns, men are permitted to wear more casual shirts and ties for Sunday morning meetings.
  • Male followers: Dress pants and dress shirt or casual dress shirt. "Faithful" men are expected to wear ties.
  • Young men: Dress pants or casual dress pants. Ties are encouraged but not expected typically

  • Older women workers: Hair in a bun, dress or blouse and skirt.
  • Younger women worker: Hair in a bun, dress or blouse and skirt.
  • Elders wife: Hair in a bun, dress or more formal blouse and skirt (more relaxed in country but almost always wears hair in a bun)
  • Women followers: Dress or more formal or even casual dress skirt. Never wear pants to a meeting
  • Girls: A casual dress or casual dress skirts and long sleeve blouse. Girls are encouraged to wear their hair in buns and to look like the "sister workers".
  • Babies are allowed in meetings but may be required by the workers to sit by the doors so they can be taken out if they make too much noise.

More formal attire for: Workers Meetings, Special Meetings, WED of conventions, Sunday of conventions

Less formal attire for: weekdays of conventions, wed night meetings, midweek meetings

Most teachings of workers is imposed on women

Women's Hair

This is the biggest outward focus in the cult about women. Women are encouraged to wear their hair long, not cut it and put it up in a bun. You can see this right away when you walk into a 2x2 gospel meeting. Women try to get around these rules by "trimming" (they avoid using the word "cut" or "cutting" ) their hair. That's kind of funny because they insist that "trimming" is not the same as "cutting", therefore it's OK for them to "trim" their hair. Also, workers don't seem to like girls wearing "bangs".

Women's Jewelry

Women are strongly discouraged form wearing any jewelry. It used to be that even wedding bands were forbidden in early days. Today some may wear bracelets. The overseers and workers are enforcing rules less as they are losing followers.

Women's makeup

Women are very strongly discouraged from wearing makeup. Workers may use the following verses to support their view (if you can liken face painting and "tired her head" to makeup.

2Ki 9:30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window. And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master? And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot. And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king's daughter. And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands.

Women's clothing

Women are encouraged to dress like the female homeless preachers. Women are mostly discouraged from wearing denim. They are encouraged to wear dresses, skirts and blouses. Younger women may wear skirts that go way up on the side (how's that for getting around the worker's rules) or nearly see through ones (when sun behind them). The focus seems to be on what the workers want, not on modesty. The may be because modesty does not rule out inexpensive jewelry. Also, women may be encouraged to wear dresses or skirts while working (this is immodest in many instances).

I have heard more than one worker complaining about people who showed up at Boring, OR Convention preparations wearing denim.

I have noticed that many women dress very poorly and start putting on weight as they try to eat out of their religious depression. I think it would be horrible to be a woman 2x2. They are the "lowest" on the rankings compared to overseers, workers, elders, men etc. It would be awful to be stuck in a marriage where the husband is selfish, the worker's deceitful and demanding, AND trying to raise kids!
